Patricia Osseweijer
Patricia Osseweijer is Professor of Science Communication. She has a PhD in science communication (VU University Amsterdam) and a masters degree in molecular biology (Utrecht University) with professional experience in the management of international and Netherlands national research and education projects together with earlier experience in curriculum development and management of fund acquisition.
In 1999 she was appointed Managing Director of the Department of Biotechnology and Executive Secretary for the Research School Biotechnological Sciences Delft Leiden at the Delft University of Technology. She initiated a new research and education group on society issues in biotechnology which led to the establishment of the Section on Biotechnology and Society at the Delft University of Technology.
In 2002 Patricia was involved in the establishment of the Kluyver Centre for Genomics of Industrial Fermentation and appointed as its Managing Director. She developed the Genomics and Society Programme and became Programme Leader responsible for the coordination of the societal research projects in several universities as well as for the integration of these projects in the communication strategy of the Kluyver Centre.
As coordinator of many EC-funded projects she maintains large international networks and has initiated many international multi-stakeholder events. Her research interests focus on the role of scientists in public interaction, public opinion forming, novel forms of public communication and ethics.
Following the success of the“Imagine” science communication project for secondary schools she initiated the Imagine Life Sciences Foundation (2005) which she chairs.
