Michiel Korthals
Michiel Korthals is Professor and Chair of Applied Philosophy at Wageningen University. The chair group Applied Philosophy, Wageningen University, has established itself the last ten years firmly in the core of the societal and scientific debate around bioethics. Animal ethics, environmental ethics, ethics of food and healthcare have been practiced both in research and teaching, which resulted in i.a. 8 dissertations, the organization of large and small conferences and expert workshops (i.a. the first Congress of EURSAFE), and the fruitful work on seven NWO-subsidized projects.
Michiel Korthals studied Philosophy, Sociology, German and Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam and the Karl Ruprecht Universität in Heidelberg. His academic interests include deliberative theories, American Pragmatism and bioethics, and ethical problems concerning food production and environmental issues. Korthals has been invited by several national and international organizations to write essays on the ethics of food (NvBE, FAO) and to give lectures on Biotechnology, Food and Ethics (Michigan State University, Purdue University, Missouri University, Lancaster University, Guelph University and Hebrew University, Israel).
His books include: Filosofie en intersubjectiviteit [Philosophy and Intersubjectivity, 1983], Duurzaamheid en democratie [Sustainability and Democracy, 1995], Tussen voeding en medicijn [Between Food and Medicine, 2001], and Voor het eten [Before Dinner, 2002; translation forthcoming].
